Essex Senior League Premier - Match Summary

Back in the mid 1970’s there was a little-known film called The Land That Time Forgot. In some respects, this match felt a bit like the game that time forgot. OK, if you were one of the 90 (or 85?) in attendance or some part of the two teams playing, you probably realised the importance of this lower table six pointer. As for the rest of us and the social media world, the game disappeared into the ether or somewhere similar.

Admittedly, in my case, this was of my own doing as I was out with friends in a pub in Wapping instead of at Hargrave Park, Stansted. The fabulous FWP did keep me updated but, unfortunately, didn’t feed me very much information about the game. If you read my stuff, and as you’re reading this, I guess you probably do…thank you! You’ll also know that I try to do some sort of match summary if I can’t do a proper match report, and trawl the social media for the facts and anything that tells me anything about the game…video footage is the ultimate dream!

As I say, this time my search did not provide a lot of joy so, no more excuses, here’s my very limited match summary of a very important point for The Bridge. What do I know?

I know that for the first time in a long time, Laurence Whymark was not donning the pink in goal for Hullbridge or any other colour for that matter as Dom Alexandru made his debut between the Hullbridge sticks. Whether this is permanent or temporary, I don’t know!

I know that Danny Hurford, who has suffered so badly from injury this season, was in the starting line-up, good news mate, good to have you back, properly.

I know that FWP had Callum Knowlden as captain, but it probably was Connor Hart (although I’m sure Callum would do a good job also).

I know that there were either 85 or 90 in attendance depending on what you read!

I know that this was Archie West’s second goal of the season for Stansted and it put them 1-0 up after 8 minutes.

I know that Sam Carter got injured in the warm up so The Ranger took his place on the bench.

I know that also on the bench was Kayne Roberts, also making his debut in Hullbridge colours and I also know that when you Google Kayne Roberts, the famous search engine keeps trying to take you to Kanye West!

I know that it was a sloping pitch that did not lend itself to The Bridge trying to play football on it and that Stansted were very happy to play a long ball game.

I know that we probably made more substitutions than FWP listed (none!) and that one of those, The Ranger himself saved the day with The Bridge equaliser.

I know that he deserved MOM for his performance, not missing a header, although there was no mention of what happened when he kicked the ball!

Back to that film I mentioned at the beginning of this…

The storyline was basically:
“During WWI, a German submarine destroys a British ship and takes its survivors on board. Later, the submarine takes a wrong turn and reaches a land inhabited by Neanderthals and dinosaurs”.

For the purposes of this piece of prose, let's call the German submarine a SUB because, coincidentally, that’s what The Ranger was on the day. I shouldn’t think Stansted is a land inhabited by Neanderthals and dinosaurs and, on the day, I don’t think there were any Germans involved, but the match that time forgot had a hero that surely every film needs and in that starring role was Tom Ranger…Hullbridge’s star for the day!

A good point for The Bridge in a game that is probably forgotten already but I’ll keep looking, maybe Tom’s goal will turn up on social media somewhere or maybe not…still, one thing we can remember is…

He wasn’t meant to be on the bench, but it turned out fine that he was, and our hero saved the day, probably whilst avoiding the attacks of Neanderthals & dinosaurs…well played mate!
