Match Report

Hullbridge Sports FC 2-2 Wadham Lodge FC

With a massive 6 pointer in prospect for Sports, Hullbridge were pleased to have Rob Hodgson returning, although it was a different role for him outside of the back four. Jimmy Cox was not available, but Sports had one of their strongest sides out for a long time.

With it being a ‘must win’ game for all concerned, with both sides trying to get out of the bottom four, there was always going to be goals in it, but the home side were hoping they would all be for Sports!

With Hullbridge being renowned for being slow starters, it was nice to see Luke Hornsley get a shot in after only a minute and force the visiting keeper to pull off a good save. Then two minutes later Eamon Payne heads over from a Matt Tapley corner. Two chances in as many minutes and you would have been convinced that this was going to be three points in the bag, especially when Luke Hornsley picked the ball up in the box, rounded the visiting keeper, but with the angle against him, he could only fire his shot across the face of the goal.

With chance after chance coming for Luke Hornsley you would have put money on him scoring, but he dragged a shot wide on 20 minutes after he was played through by Eamon Payne.

38 minutes and Callum Ibe watched his free kick go in to the side netting and then right on the stroke of half time it was Ibe again who was played through by Eamon Payne, but his shot went wide.

It was a lazy start in the early period of the second half for Sports and they were punished on 51 minutes when Danny Francis managed to lob Hullbridge keeper Jamie Merralls to put the visitors in the lead, but an immediate response from Sports put them back in the game as Callum Ibe opened his account for Hullbridge. It was a well taken goal by Ibe as he weaved around the chasing defenders and smashes the ball passed the keeper and in to the roof of the net.

On 63 minutes Sports went in to the lead when a good ball was played through from Perry Hirst and Matt Rose ran on to the pass and finished well passing the onrushing Wadham Lodge keeper.

On 65 minutes you would have put money on Luke Hornsley scoring when he beat the defence and keeper, but he crashed his shot against the post, which was a major let off for the visitors.

On 72 minutes Wadham Lodge got back in the game when Abdoulie Njai equalised and Sports were penalised for some lazy play. At 2-2 it could have gone either way and on 74 minutes Jamie Merralls was forced to pull off a great save from Paul Oshin to keep Hullbridge in the game.

The final effort of the game came from Perry Hirst, but he blasted over the bar and the game finished 2-2 and after all the efforts Hullbridge had, they can consider this as points dropped.

FT- Hullbridge Sports FC 2-2 Wadham Lodge FC

With four draws in the last five games Hullbridge can’t continue to drop so many points, when they still sit in the relegation zone. Games in hand mean nothing and Hullbridge have been in situations previously where games in hand could have put them in the top five, but when you get a backup of fixtures and you can be playing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the points can’t be guaranteed.

This was a lazy performance from Sports and they must learn to see off games.
